Have you noticed how computer books tend to be very serious, voluminous tomes with few, if any, immediately usable bits of information?
In writing Geek Girl Guide, I've taken a different approach.
As a web developer and lifestyle writer in the Seattle area, I know 2 things.
(1) Web developers need to learn a vast array of new things so quickly, most subject-specific computer how-to's are of little or no value. Designing compelling websites requires marketing savvy, design skill, and programming know-how. All very different skill sets, all areas changing rapidly as the Web reinvents marketing and business processes.
(2) An integrated approach to learning Web skills is not only completely relevant to the technology workplace, it is also a great way to learn. Especially for girls, who having a lot of common sense, like to see things tied into things they care about.
So, hopefully you'll visit again. We'll discuss some essential things, from creating a myspace skin that's all your own, to creating a vector graphic in Adobe Illustrator to apply to your favorite T-shirt or hoodie.
